Easy Morning Breakfast Smoothies!

When I ask members what kind of content they would like to see on the site, so often I hear weight loss and easy recipes for weight loss. While I am a firm believer that we are beautiful at any size, I recently went through my own weight loss journey to drop the extra COVID pounds, getting back to a more comfortable weight for me.

My weight loss journey wasn’t about being on a “diet”, instead, it was all about eating MINDFULLY. Eating for nourishment, not just to grab something on the run. To stay away from endless snacking. I needed to eat more nutrient rich foods that would fill me up, tasted good and kept me in my point range.

I am not, nor have I ever been, a breakfast eater. I don’t like breakfast and I’m never really hungry in the morning. However, I found that by skipping breakfast, I wasn’t setting myself up for success later in the day. So, how could I fuel myself in the morning in a way that I liked? With an espresso smoothie! I started getting into morning smoothies, combining my coffee with protein powder and delicious flavors, and then trying to load them up with as much goodness as possible.

A couple of keys to a successful smoothie:

  • Frozen bananas are a MUST as a base. They provide the creaminess that makes the smoothie milkshake smooth. I buy multiple bunches of bananas at a time, cut them up into pieces (about three pieces per banana) and freeze them
  • I add two shots of espresso to my morning smoothies. We have a Nespresso coffee maker. I try to let the coffee cool as much as possible before adding it to the blender so it doesn’t “melt” bananas . If you have cold brew on hand, you can use that too
  • My favorite protein powder is Sprouts Vegan Vanilla Protein Powder, but use what you like.
  • If you have greens, I like spinach and kale, feel free to add them to either recipe
  • Get a GOOD blender. I am a huge fan of the Vitamix. It is an investment, for sure, but well worth it.

Ok, so now onto the good stuff. Here are my two favorite smoothie recipes:

Black Forest Smoothie

1 cup (8 oz) unsweetened vanilla almond milk

1 large handful of greens

Load the blender as follows. Frozen first – add bananas and cherries.

Then add your powders, cacao, protein, and Splenda.

Add espresso, almond milk and greens. Blend until smooth and enjoy!!

Pumpkin Smoothie:
